MYP / DP Science Teacher

Responsible to:
Head of Secondary, Head of Department

General
To maintain ethical and professional standards in attendance, punctuality, appearance, conduct, meeting of deadlines and the general fulfillment of responsibilities.
The Secondary School forms part of the wider St Nicholas community and all community members are expected to contribute positively to the whole community and take a full part in school life.
Contribute enthusiastically and effectively to the ECA programme.

Professional Knowledge
1. To have secure pedagogical knowledge and understanding and be familiar with current educational practice and developments.
2. To understand the school’s beliefs about learning and promote the conditions to ignite passion within the learners.
3. To know and understand the school’s curriculum.

Planning
4. To be responsible for the planning, preparation, organisation of learning based on appropriate curriculum documentation and knowledge of the students’ needs.
5. To plan well-paced lessons that take into account different learning profiles and the differing levels of each learners’ academic, emotional and cognitive development.
6. To effectively deploy Personalised Learning colleagues and other professionals connected to the learning of each student.
7. Work collaboratively to produce medium and short-term planning which promotes learning.
8. To contribute to unit plans, both for interdisciplinary as well as subject-specific units on Managebac.

Practice and learning
9. To use a range of teaching strategies carefully selected appropriate for an MYP/DP classroom
10. To effectively use ICT and 21st-century communication tools for learning and assessing.
11. To engage in daily practice consistent with the philosophy of the school that emphases an inquiry-based approach and promoting the IBO’s learner profile.
12. To manage the learning environment in a way that learners are motivated and active participants in the process, developing autonomy and respect for themselves and others.
13. To create an organised and stimulating learning environment and use it as an effective tool for learning.
14. To set home learning in accordance with school policy, considering the individual needs of the students.
15. To keep accurate records on Managebac of activities carried out and teaching resources used.
16. To encourage respect in all parts of the learning environment, and
17. Engage in regular reflection with students and colleagues as well as individually and document these reflections using Managebac and other relevant platforms.

Assessment
18. To use a range and balance of purposefully selected assessment strategies in line with the school’s assessment policy to evaluate learning and inform future learning, and incorporate assessment for and of learning.
19. To keep appropriate and systematic records of learning, development and achievement on Managebac in order to provide evidence of the range of activities and progress over time.
20. To identify and support all learners appropriately and adapt assessments as necessary in accordance with guidance from the Personalised Learning team where appropriate.
21. To support the external assessment process for eAssessments and Diploma Programme assessments based on guidance from relevant programme coordinators.

Reporting
22. Keep parents informed of the progress and attainment of their children and advise on the needs of the students through scheduled parent meetings and the school reporting system,

Communication
23. To liaise with the Class Tutors and the Pastoral Team, keeping them informed of individual learner progress.
24. To liaise with the MYP Coordinator, Head of Secondary, and the Personalised Learning team where appropriate.
25. To attend and contribute positively to all relevant school meetings.

Professional Development
26. To be responsible for their own learning and professional growth.
27. To participate constructively in the Performance Management system.
28. To attend Continued Professional Development courses where appropriate.
29. To maintain professional relationships with students, teaching colleagues and support staff.

Other
30. To be part of a Pastoral Team and perform the duties of a tutor.
31. To cover for absent colleagues.
32. To carry out additional duties that might reasonably be asked.
33. Participate in the school’s ECA programme.

Successful candidates are expected to have:
● A relevant degree in the subject and an internationally-recognised teaching qualification
● A minimum of three years’ teaching experience, as well as evidence of recent professional development
● Experience of teaching the MYP and/or DP (Desirable)
● A commitment to inquiry-based learning and the school’s vision and mission
● A commitment to international mindedness and IB teaching philosophy (as found on www.ibo.org)
● Passion and enthusiasm and a belief in all students
● Additional qualities to add to the school community, such as experience with extracurricular activities and/or sports

Working hours for all teachers are 07:45 to 16:15 (16:30 Wednesday for staff meetings and CPD).
